Mike Faria

Mike Faria

I am Mike Faria. I’m 39, born and raised in New Jersey. As a teenager, I experimented with drugs and alcohol to deal with my childhood traumas. In October 2019, I went into a major depression and began drinking more then I ever had in my life. I had to take leave from my job to try to function through the drunken hours. I thought I was going to be able to stop but I couldn’t. In January 2020, I was found barely breathing in my house from acute liver failure, hepatic encephalopathy, and kidney failure. Two weeks prior I had noticed my eyes turned yellow. Toxins had built up in my blood from my liver not functioning. I was rushed to the ER where I was in a coma for almost 3 weeks. I woke up on January 27th to be told I did not qualify for a liver transplant and that I would have to be sober for 6 months to even make the list.

Doctors said there was very little chance of survival even with a liver transplant. I was 268 lbs when I woke up. I had to learn how to walk and eat by myself all over again. Through good spirits, love from my family, and faith in god and Jesus… within 3 months of waking up my liver had to returned to normal functioning levels.

My kidneys healed. My mind healed. My soul healed. I was given a second chance to live my life. And this time around I yearn to feel and go through every emotion that use to be able to break me down to drink. Today, I do therapy once a week that helps me deal with issues that don’t involve addiction. I am Grateful to have problems, Grateful to have struggles, Grateful to have peace and clarity to face life with positive coping behaviors but Most of all I’m grateful to be alive and be able to share my story with others.
